Brotherhood

The Shaar Shalom Brotherhood is a member of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, an organization of approximately 270 clubs associated with the Masorti/Conservative movement across North America and globally. It is the aim of the Shaar Shalom Brotherhood to provide a welcoming social setting in which to build friendships while also building interesting and innovative programming and activities. Building leadership skills by involvement at a grassroots level is a focus and to ensure the future of the organization by encouraging new members to get involved.
As part of the FJMC, ordinary club events are transformed to the extraordinary through innovative programs that enhance spirituality, increase learning, develop leadership skills, and foster fellowship. An excellent example of this would be the annual Yellow Candle Campaign that the Shaar Shalom Men’s Club runs.

The Yellow Candle™ program, conceived in 1981 by members of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs at Beth Tzedec in Toronto, helps to keep alive the memory of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust.
The symbolism of the yellow wax (yellow arm bands), the Magen David and the barbed wire all bring the imagery of the Holocaust to mind. The children departing for concentration camps pictured on the candles reminds us that we owe it to the departed to teach our children what happened to the six million Jews.
Members of the Shaar Shalom Brotherhood and other volunteers deliver the candles to Shaar Shalom members. Along with the candle is a letter requesting financial support for this program in the form of a donation.
